Assignments
Meet Melanie
We are delighted to welcome Melanie Cooper, a wonderfully experienced guest teacher who travels far and wide sharing her expert skills. Melanie has over two decades teaching experience in a range of styles; initially starting from an Ashtanga background, but now favouring the ‘softer’ Yin and Yoga Nidra elements alongside other specialisms such as anatomy.
When Melanie isn’t delivering level 2 YTTC (300 hours) and other teacher trainings, you can find her sharing her skills on beautiful retreats abroad, or spending time at the beach in cooler climbs in Cornwall!
Who this is for
We welcome practitioners and teachers of all yoga backgrounds to enrol.
This course would primarily benefit qualified teachers, trainees and teachers of other disciplines, such as pilates, who want to add a new dimension to their offerings.
It’s also a wonderful course for those who have, or would like to develop a personal yin practice and want to enrich and expand their understanding. (Please note, this course is otherwise intended as a supplement to existing teaching qualifications and does not qualify you as a teacher in it’s own right).

Comprehensive Guide to Yin YTTC
History, Philosophy, Benefits, and Differences from Other Yoga Styles
History, Philosophy, Benefits, and Differences from Other Yoga Styles
Yin Yoga is a gentle and introspective style of yoga that focuses on long-held, passive poses to target the deep connective tissues of the body. It has gained popularity in recent years, offering a counterbalance to the more dynamic and active styles of yoga. Originating from ancient Chinese Taoist practices, this style incorporates elements of mindfulness, meditation, and traditional Hatha yoga.
The history of Yin can be traced back to the teachings of Paulie Zink, who introduced Taoist yoga to the West in the 1970s. However, the practice gained wider recognition through the work of Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers, who developed their own approaches to Yin and began teaching it internationally in the 1990s.
Yin Yoga is grounded in the philosophy of Yin and Yang, where Yin represents the passive, cooling, and receptive aspect, while Yang symbolizes the active, warming, and dynamic aspect. The practice emphasizes stillness, surrender, and an acceptance of discomfort, fostering a meditative state of mind. It encourages practitioners to explore their physical and emotional boundaries, cultivating patience and introspection.
One of the key benefits of Yin Yoga is its ability to improve flexibility and joint mobility. The long-held poses gently stretch and stress the connective tissues, tendons, and ligaments, promoting greater elasticity and range of motion. Additionally, Yin stimulates the flow of energy or “qi” through the meridian pathways of the body, which can enhance overall well-being and vitality.
Compared to other yoga styles, Yin stands out for its emphasis on long holds (typically 3-5 minutes) and passive stretches. Unlike more dynamic styles like Vinyasa or Ashtanga, Yin targets the deeper layers of the body, rather than focusing on muscular strength and cardiovascular fitness. It complements and balances the more active yoga styles, providing a meditative and restorative experience.
Importance and Enhancement of Yoga Practice and Teaching Skills
This training program emphasises the importance of self-inquiry and self-reflection, encouraging you to explore your own physical, mental, and emotional experiences in the practice of Yin Yoga. This self-exploration enhances your personal practice and enhances your ability to guide others in their yoga journey.
By delving into the philosophy and principles of Yin, you gain a solid foundation for teaching this unique style effectively. You learn how to create flows that target specific areas of the body and address common challenges faced by students in a Yin posture. This knowledge allows you to tailor your classes to meet the needs of your students, promoting their growth and well-being.
This Yin YTTC hones your teaching skills by providing opportunities for hands-on practice and feedback. You gain confidence in delivering clear instructions, offering modifications and variations, and creating a supportive and nurturing environment for your students. The course also delves into the art of class planning, helping you design well-structured and cohesive Yin Yoga classes.
Overall, undertaking a Yin YTT course not only enriches your personal practice and understanding of Yin Yoga but also equips you with the necessary skills to become an effective and knowledgeable teacher. It empowers you to guide students through the transformative practice of Yin Yoga, helping them cultivate balance, mindfulness, and self-awareness. Whether you aspire to teach Yin Yoga professionally or simply want to enhance your own practice, this training program is a valuable investment in your growth as a yogi and a teacher.
